What do I Wear to my Light & Airy Photoshoot?

This may sound silly to ask, but please do! One of the most common questions I get from my clients when booking a session with me is, what should I wear to my photoshoot?! Surprisingly, my hope is that this question does comes up in our conversations, because finding the right attire will make all the difference in how your photos come out. As a light & airy photographer, it is highly recommended to follow these important suggestions below so that you and your loved one(s) can receive the most creamy, romantic images that you have always envisioned!

Let’s Talk Colors!

The most important advice I can give to my clients who are seeking bright and natural photographs is to wear LIGHT & SOFT colors. This can include pastel colors, such as baby pinks, light blues, and neutral colors, such as beiges, whites, and grays. These types of colors will pair magically with the rays of the sunlight that will be sure to illuminate your images. I cannot stress this enough; wearing light colors is key!

Let’s Talk Outfit Ideas!

“Comfort” comes right to mind when thinking about what to wear to your photoshoot. For one thing, I want you to feel confident in what you are wearing. Something to think about before choosing your outfit is what types of clothing will enhance your best features and possibly hide what you do not want to be seen on camera. This will help ensure that you feel and look your best the day of your session.

Some things to avoid when choosing your outfit are bold prints, darker colors, stripes and crazy patterns, large graphics, or anything that would make you feel uncomfortable. Stick to simplistic: plain, florals, little detail. Remember, sometimes less is more!!

My suggestions for outfit ideas fall under three main categories- Dressy, Dressy-Casual, or Casual:

Dressy

For women, I suggest wearing a short or long dress (maxi dresses are my FAVE) with pretty details, paired with heels, wedges, or trendy sandals.

For men, I suggest wearing a button up shirt, dress pants (slacks), a blazer, a belt, and oxford shoes. This will ensure a clean, sleek look.

Dressy-Casual

For women, I suggest wearing a FLOWY dress or dressy pants with an elegant blouse and blazer, paired with heels or flats.

For men, I suggest wearing a button up shirt (without a blazer). The sleeves can be rolled up or down and for a more relaxed look, you can keep the shirt untucked. On bottoms, khakis is definitely the way to go, paired with loafers or oxfords (such as Sperrys).

Casual

For women, I suggest wearing a flowy top (ruffles are adorable!) with jeans (can be cuffed at the bottom) and sandals, OR a flowy short dress with Keds or flats, OR a neutral colored sweater with jeans and booties for those fall and winter snuggly months. I want you to feel comfortable in everyday clothes that fits your personality!

For men, I suggest a long or short sleeve t-shirt (maybe with some buttons), with jeans, light colored pants, or khakis. For shoes, a trendy sneaker or boat shoe (such as from ZARA or Vans) would complete the look!

Let’s Talk Cohesion!

When taking pictures with your partner, you do not want to clash. Sometimes, wearing the same exact color as your lover does not always go together, unless you add the right amounts in the right places. For example, if you both want to wear white, one could wear white jeans, while the other wears a white blouse. OR you both can have white on top, but one may have white in the details of their shirt, rather than a solid color. There are many ways to ensure that both you and you partner’s choice of outfits compliment each other.

Some of my favorite colorways that l highly recommend when picking out an outfit with your other half includes:

baby blues with white, light pinks with whites, beiges with whites, beiges with light pinks, light blues with creme, light greys with baby pinks, mauve (light purple) with whites, etc.

Here are some muted color combinations for inspiration:
