How do I Prepare for my Light & Airy Photoshoot?

Taking pictures with the ones you love is quite exciting…but it can also be nerve-racking too, especially if it is your first time behind a professional camera. Looking back, I remember how I was before getting my engagement photos done with my now-called husband, and let me tell you…I know that feeling. “What if I pose funny?” “What should I bring?” “Is there something specific I should wear?” “Where should we take our pictures?” “When is the best time of day to take photos?” These were some of the many questions I had before anxiously attending our beautiful photoshoot. To help you prepare for your session, feel confident with your loved one(s), and ensure picture-perfect photographs, I am here to answer many of these questions for you!

How should I pose?

During every photoshoot, my job as your photographer is to allow you to feel as comfortable and confident behind my camera lens as I possibly can. Something I always tell my clients is to be themselves. Although it sounds cheesy, it’s true. I never want my couples to feel as if they need to try hard in order to achieve perfect photos, because that will be more visible than anything on camera.

However, it is not everyday that couples are asked to stand in front of a big, bulky camera and pose. To help ease any nerves or anxiety during your photoshoot, I will always be the one guiding you throughout the entire session. In other words, I will be walking you through poses and creative ideas the entire time, that it will feel more natural to you than you may think! Of course, however, I want to capture you and your honey in your own, natural elements: I want to see the cuddles, the kisses, the laughs, and sparks in your eyes. If I don’t, I know that my goal hasn’t been achieved: to recreate your story through every click of my camera.

So with that said, please feel free to let loose and pretend it’s just you and your other half living life together, and that no one else is there watching. Me? I will just be smiling the whole time behind my camera as I watch your love story unfold in front of my eyes.

What should I bring with me?

PROPS: I am a HUGE lover of props. In fact, depending on the type of shoot we are doing (fall, engagement, holiday, etc.) you can count on me to come prepared. However, if there is something(s) specific you want to bring with you, such as a blanket, flower, bracelet, basket, champagne bottle, (possibly even a pet), please do! It’s always fun to incorporate those extra details into your session.

OUTFITS: If you are seeking to book with me, I do allow up to one outfit change! If you are looking to do this, I think it is always fun to mix up the style of clothing, depending on the shoot. For instance, if you are interested in engagement photos, going from a long maxi dress, to a short flowy dress can make it appear that you had two separate sessions...pretty neat!!

PETS: If you read my “Meet Marissa” page, you have probably already learned that I am a BIG dog lover. With that being said, I do allow dogs or cats to be a part of your photoshoot. However, that will have to be discussed with me prior to your photoshoot for preparation and liability purposes. I am always excited to have some furry friends join us!!!

OTHER: Oh, and don’t forget to bring those stunning smiles of yours! ;)

What should I wear?

If you visit my blog “What Should I Wear to my Light & Airy Photoshoot, ” there are many helpful and specific suggestions as to what you should wear to ensure light, natural photographs. In short, sticking to lights, neutrals, and muted colors will look the most creamy on camera.

Appearance wise, I always encourage my clients to treat themselves before a shoot. You will always have these memories forever, so why not feel your best?! Get your hair and makeup done…you deserve it! And believe me when I say that this will make all the difference in your photos, especially since the sunlight will be sure to enhance your features too. If you are looking to get your makeup done, I suggest sticking to natural makeup looks. This will absolutely pair the best with the sun and coincide with your light and airy memoir that you will receive.

Where should I take my pictures?

I love this question!!! Reason being: this is all up to you and where your lover envision your love story being captured. If it is at a specific venue, I will be there! Beach, park, forest, sunflower field…you name it!

Since I am a Long Island Photographer, there are many gorgeous places I have visited for photo purposes and highly recommend. You can visit my “Portfolio” section to get some ideas of where to go. Do not feel that you need to be in the most spectacular area to achieve picture-perfect photos. Remember, I base my photography on natural light, and there is nothing more beautiful than that, no matter where you are. I have taken engagement proposals in backyards, for example, and I’ll go to any location that plays important significance in you and your partner’s life.

When is the best time of day to take photos?

If you haven’t read it by now, I LOVE the sun! Not just to lay out in, but to base my photos on. With that being said, besides from certain weddings and indoor events, I will almost always take your photos directly after sunrise or before sunset. This will ensure glistening, romantic photos for you and your loved one to obsess over. I keep track of the sun during each season, so I will always be in contact with you to schedule your shoot at the best times.

I hope after reading this, you now have more direction with how to come fully prepared and ready to take part in a much-needed photoshoot with me! If you ever have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. I will always be sure to get back to you as quickly as I can. Thanks for stopping by! :)
